This week’s top ten undergoes very little change as only Oklahoma drops from the top ten after losing to the U by just one point.

The most interesting (if we can call it that) news that’s come out of this weeks rankings is a bit of musical chairs between a couple of teams in the top 10. In one hand we have Boise State and Virginia Tech switching spots. Apparently the Broncos’ 34-16 win over the inept Aggies of UC Davis (who?) was unimpressive compared to Virginia Tech’s closer 34-26 win over an almost equally feckless Duke. Conversely, Cincinnati’s 37-13 win over Miami (OH), a staple of ESPN’s bottom ten, must have out-shined Ohio State’s 33-14 win over a slightly more competent Indiana. It’s worth noting that Indiana scored a game-ending TD, so it was really a 33-7 ballgame. I swear, sometimes these rankings seem a bit more arbitrary than I’d like as a fan.

Dropping from the rankings altogether were Houston 12, Georgia 18, Michigan 22, California 24. Houston and Michigan I get after showing folks that they’re perfectly capable of losing to unranked teams. Cal I get for showing a fairly piss-poor effort against USC. But Georgia? Really? I guess a down-to-the-wire game, lost by a touchdown to a favored opponent has been deemed worthy of losing one’s ranking. I’m sure Bulldog fans are just thrilled.

Maintaining ESPN’s bottom 10 superiority… the fighting Hilltoppers of Western Kentucky! The Hilltoppers, led by coach David Elson, continued their win-less streak of 12 games by losing to college football’s mildly mediocre, Navy.

Tune in over the next several weeks as we get closer to our first BCS rankings, when things seem to be even more arbitrary.

FWIW – Georgia was actually favored by 3.
