Philadelphia’s win over Colorado in Game 3 of the NLDS has many of the Rockies and their fans calling bullshit. From MLB.com:
In the top of the ninth with Jimmy Rollins at second, Utley hit a pitch from Rockies closer Huston Street that, replays showed, clearly bounced off Utley’s leg while he was still in the batter’s box before landing in fair ground in front of the plate and along the first-base line. A ball that hits a batter while he’s still in the box is supposed to be ruled dead.
Rollins ended up scoring, and the Phils ended up winning the game, so the call definitely could have affected the game’s outcome. It’s yet another argument for instant replay, although I’m not sure if it’s a great one. What’s reviewable? What isn’t? And we can’t slow the game down anymore. But the thing that gets me about all the whining on behalf of the Rockies is that…um…didn’t they beat the Padres out for the NL Wild Card in 2007 when Matt Holliday was called safe at home on a close play in which he never actually touched the plate?
I’m not saying that Colorado doesn’t have the right to complain about a bad call. I’m just kind of satisfied that a bad call has come back to cost them a huge game and potentially the series. Why? Because I’m a miserable bastard who takes joy in the misfortune of others.
