9166559Think really hard to yourself the following question. What would be a giant waste of time, money and simply put – brainpower? Answer: A political action committee to get rid of the current BCS system in favor of a playoff system for the all important American issue… college football.

A group of college football fans launched the Playoff PAC Monday with the goal of electing similarly minded members of Congress. The hope is that if there’s enough pressure from Congress, the BCS — a complex system of computer rankings and polls that often draws criticism — will voluntarily change to a playoff system.

Do these people really think Congressman are going to start going after the college football fan vote? Do they expect to have politicians in their pocket, airing ads against their opponent, such as the following:

Mike Johnson has been in office for six years. That’s six teams who have won the college football national championship without the merit of a playoff. Mike Johnson hasn’t put a stop to this… or AIDS for that matter. So when you go to the polls, vote NO for the BCS. Vote NO for Mike Johnson.

At least the founders of this giant waste of time were smart enough to come out with a statement, somewhat admitting that their cause is… well… stupid.

“We recognize this is not a top-of-the-line issue for members of Congress and for the public, but college football is financially and culturally important to a lot of people,” said one of the PAC’s founders, Washington lawyer Matthew Sanderson. “So we feel members of Congress should spend time on a national institution that’s financially and culturally important to their constituents. We also feel there will be a lot of support out there for this type of an effort.”

Baseball is culturally important to Americans. Should we start a PAC to punish the New York Yankees and Boston Red Sox for their obscene payrolls?  NO! While I agree that a playoff system is preferable to a computer generated match up and that the Yankees and Red Sox are evil-twins whose fan bases are too stupid (except my girlfriend, hi honey…) to realize they’re pretty much the same thing, it’s about as important as whether or not I decide to fart right now in the grand scheme of things. As much as I’ll continue to yell at the television over my teams, at least I’m able to realize it’s just a freaking game.

Besides… Do we really want our Congressman getting their hands on college football if it’s such an important piece of American culture? They’ll f*ck it up more than a Jackson Pollock painting.
