Larry’s always arguing about something, so why not Derek Jeter? On last night’s episode of Curb Your Enthusiasm, Larry got into it with a stonemason regarding Jeter’s status as a great shortstop. From fangraphs.com:
Stonemason: “That guy [Derek Jeter] sucks.”
Larry David: “Who sucks?”
Stonemason: “Derek Jeter, he’s the most overrated player in baseball.”
Larry David: “What did you say?”
Stonemason: “I can’t stand Derek Jeter, you know he’s the worst defensive shortstop in baseball statistically?”
Larry David: “Oh Bullshit! He’s a great clutch hitter, he’s a great clutch player!”
Stonemason: “There’s no way he deserves that kind of money he’s making.”
I don’t know how or why this conversation got worked into the show, but uh, the stonemason brings up a good point. I’m curious as to which side of the argument Larry David really believes in – Jeter as an overhyped media creation, or a mountain of intangibles and leadership. Going to the – as Bill James would call it – bullshit dump argument of “clutch” makes me think that Larry is actually using the argument to make fun of baseball fans who do make that argument. Or I could be overthinking this show and should just enjoy my weekly dose of Jewish neurosis and awkwardness. All I know is the more Funkhouser, the better.
