It’s still extremely early on in the fantasy season but there are a whole host of things to be analyzed thus far. One of those is the fact that I’ve been far too removed from fantasy hoops for a while. I mean who the hell is Brook Lopez?
But even in my absence the same crap happens over and over again. Which is why it’s time to examine the various types of behaviors that exist amongst fantasy managers across the country.
Let us examine the first: The Waiver Wire Machine
Case in point: Me. The season is only 6 days old and I’ve already made 6 waiver wire moves. I call these moves “premature pickups.” You see that one guy has a good game for one night and you have to stash him away. Me? I’m guilty of picking up Andre Blatch and Larry Hughes in my most recent premature pickups. Will they turn out? Blatch won’t because Jamison will come back but if Hughes resembles anything of 4-5 years ago it could be a nice pick up.
Typically this manager will have made over 100 waiver moves by the end of the season.
Now is this justifiable? I think that in fantasy basketball it kind of is. You got only so many utility spots and most of these guys aren’t good enough to start on your team anyway. If you roll the dice you just might get a guy that sticks.
The issue, however, is that managers who use this tactic usually pick up and drop guys so fast they don’t even have time to audition. I guess that’s the way it goes.
I would say using this tactic has its merits but overall, stick with your gut or make a trade.
