The difference between a football first college and an academics first college is simple. In a football first college, trying to gouge someone’s eyes out like Moe of the Three Stooges will only land you a one-half suspension. A mere slap on the wrist. A suspension short enough that it wouldn’t have a lasting affect on the game. That’s probably what coach Urban Meyer had in mind when he gave Brandon Spikes a one-half suspension for trying to poke some eyes out.

The suspension is laughable and Meyer should be embarrassed. As much as we all love college football, it should be secondary to character and conduct. In fact, football is supposed to improve that. If Spikes were to try and poke someone’s eyes out of a rival company in a business meeting (should he make it to the real world) he would not get a slap on the wrist. What Urban Meyer taught this kid is that so long as you play football at the University of Florida, you’ll be taken care of. Don’t worry if you come across as a thug, good ole Coach Meyer will take care of you!
