In case you guys didn’t know about this, Rajon Rondo has a penchant for talking a lot of shit to other players.  This time however, it was directed at Chris Paul.    It all took place on Sunday at the Garden…

The procession of trash talk, sources said, pushed into the personal when Rondo was heard to tell Paul, “I’ve got a ring, and you’re never gonna win one.”

As they traded technical fouls at the Boston Garden, as emotions escalated, sources said Rondo declared that Paul wished he could be him, suggesting that his frustration dripped with envy. On the way to the locker room, Hornets coach Byron Scott heard Paul insist that Rondo “is gonna respect me as a man,” and soon Paul started on his way down the corridor to tell the Celtics point guard himself.

Several coaches prevented Paul from getting close to Rondo outside the Celtics’ locker room, but the overriding theme of Paul’s rage was easily understood

If Rondo had to trade in K.G., Pierce, Ray and Rasheed for the guys that Chris plays with [in New Orleans], I guarantee that you wouldn’t be seeing Rondo get a $55 million contract,” one Hornets source said.    [Yahoo Sports]

Let’s take a look into this a little further shall we?

Honestly this one is a tough call.  Anyone who knows basketball knows that Paul is the best point guard in the NBA by a mile.   And all signs point to this guy being a very nice guy.  He’s humble and quiet off the court.  But obviously the man is a competitor.

And let’s just get this out of the way.  Chris Paul on the Celtics?  Please.  Clearly that would make them the best team in the NBA and I don’t think it’s even close.

Which brings us to Rajon Rondo.  He too is an amazing point guard.  Guy has a penchant for triple doubles.  He’s getting assists like crazy and in the system he’s in, a $55 million contract is probably warranted.  However, does this mean he gets to talk trash to Chris Paul?

You’re damned right it does.  Players need an edge.  They need a way to break an opponent down.  They have to get inside a players’ head.  Michael Jordan did it.  Larry Bird did it.  Hell, John Stockton used to elbow centers in the balls.  Yes, in the balls, like a lot.

So the real question is this:  What KIND of trash talk is allowed?  Because I think there are players that talk trash for the sake of talking trash because they actually suck compared to other players (Deshawn Stevenson).  They have nothing better to do than act like morons.  Then you have guys with competitive fire who are into the game and just want to get after it (Kobe Bryant, Lebron, D-Wade).  And getting heated in the middle of the game is healthy in my opinion.  It’s good for the sport.

So what exactly was Rondo doing on Sundy?  I think he was partly jealous of Paul’s ability and took some cheap shots gloating in the fact that he’s in a much better situation team wise.  This didn’t sound to me like a real case of competitive trash talk.  It was merely a tactic to get Paul to play worse.

If it  did get Paul out of his game?  In today’s modern bullshit smack talk, I guess it’s warranted.  I for one let playing do the talking but we all know that’s just not how the game is played anymore…unfortunately.
