The ladies of NOW are incredibly out-of-touch, so I can’t say I’m too surprised when I read that they’ve picked yet another battle that’s only going to contribute to the already low opinion most people have of them. From ESPN.com:
The National Organization for Women believes Tom Cable should not be coaching the Oakland Raiders while the team investigates allegations that Cable has a history of violent behavior toward women.
In an e-mailed statement to USA Today on Wednesday, NOW president Terry O’Neill said, “Tom Cable’s history of violence against women raises a question: Why is he still the head coach of an NFL team?
“Mr. Cable admits having battered his first wife, and he stands accused of battering two other intimate partners as well. As a survivor of domestic violence, I know that women do not make such accusations lightly. Indeed, women have much more to lose than to gain by coming forward to tell their stories.”
“The Oakland Raiders, properly, say they are undergoing a ’serious evaluation’ of these recent allegations,” O’Neill wrote in the e-mail. “At the very least he should be suspended during this process. … A man who has admitted battering his wife has no business being a role model for all of us who would like to be able to look up to the head coach of an NFL football team.”
I’m no fan of Tom Cable, but this seems a bit extreme. Cable admitted that he hit his first wife…over 20 years ago! Hitting women is pretty low, but should one be punished for something 20 years after the fact? Remember when I threw eggs at that house when I was in fourth grade? I should probably be disbarred for that, huh?
The bottom line is that there are conflicting reports (Glenda Cable, contrary to divorce documents, has recently said through her attorney that Cable never hit her), but that doesn’t matter to organizations like NOW. An accusation is as good as a conviction to these people, and most of them are more hateful and prejudiced than the people they accuse of wrongdoing.
When I was at UF, a disgusting stripper accused a bunch of guys in the Delta Chi house of raping her. Naturally, NOW was on campus protesting and calling for the fraternity to be kicked off campus. A videotape surfaced showing the stripper consenting to and having sex with one of the guys (I had a copy of it because I rule), and that debunked the rape claims pretty quickly. Egg on your stupid face, NOW. This is a similar situation – NOW rushing to the side of an accuser simply because she’s a woman, jumping to conclusions and calling for punishment before the facts have become clear. It’s just like the Duke Lacrosse case, and you’d think these idiots would have learned by now. But it’s never been about helping victims, it’s been about bullying men and will continue to be.
If Cable has a lengthy history of hitting women or has done it pretty recently, I guess I can get behind a suspension. But when all you’ve got is a claim of battery dating back 20 years, you’re just going to look like the crackpot lunatics that you really are, NOW.
