It looks like Yankees manager Joe Girardi is going to change his jersey number to signify the Yankees’ quest for a record 28th championship. From the New York Post:
In a statement released today, the Yankees’ longtime owner, who did not attend the latest clinching victory at the Stadium, called for another championship — quickly.
“We’ll enjoy this win. And the quest for number 28 begins,” the Boss said.
Girardi, who wore jersey No. 27 as a symbol of the team’s nine-year quest for this championship, said he would try to change his uniform number to 28.
“I think I’m gonna make a number change,” Girardi said on WFAN.
I guess it’s kind of sweet that Girardi cares so much about the Yankees winning another title, but all in all, this seems like kind of a douchey move. I can’t help but think that Girardi was the guy on a college intramural softball team who insisted on wearing number 69 with the name “Babeslayer” on the back of his jersey. Great game, breh! Let’s celebrate with some clutch ‘za before pregaming for tonight’s late-night. It’s gonna be epic, broseph! No fat chicks!
