It’s no secret that the top college football programs will shell out some serious coin for the top coaches. We’re Americans and winning is everything. It’s the same in any sport. If you win, we (the fans) could careless about your bloated salary. Loose, and we’ll go so far as to blame the downfall of the economy on you.

Granted it’s not nearly as bad in college football as it is in any professional sport (looking at you A-Rod), but for the sake of making fans of these losing programs feel better, here are 5 college football coaches you can blame the downfall of the economy on.

1. Florida State Seminoles: Bobby Bowden(4-5)

Scott Stadium / Carl Smith Center

This comes as no surprise, since Bowden has been in the headlines all season with alumni calling for his firing. I guess years of success don’t allow for a few crap seasons in Seminole country.

2. Wake Forest Demon Deacons: Jim Grobe (4-6)

Jim Grobe… Really? Should I have heard of this guy? Apparently he came out of Ohio University before he took over at Wake Forest. Because when I think of good college football, I think Ohio University (or Wake Forest, for that matter).

3. Virginia Cavaliers: Al Groh (3-6)

Give me a team. I bet I can get three wins and I’ll gladly take over $1 million to do so.

4. Washington Huskies: Steve Sarkisian (3-6)

Looks like he’s taking care of business, Ty Willingham style! At least they have that win over USC.

5. Maryland Terrapins: Ralph Friedgen (2-7)

Maryland is paying their football coach over a million? Do they really just think that giving these guys a huge contract will get it done? I mean… it’s Maryland!

I’d say Bowden gets a pass (sort of) since he pretty much built the FSU program, and even if he can’t coach anymore, he’ll bring in some recruits. This is it for him anyhow, consider it a going-away present.
