dwight-howard

(Note Jason Kidd’s son’s head in the background)

OK, Dwight Howard is a fun guy.  He’s got a great personality and those cute little ears that make you want to eat him all up!  He’s an absolute beast and I’m willing to bet wears a 55 long Jacket  (actually it’s a 50XL).  So it’s not as if I have a problem with Mr. Howard.  In fact he’s one of my favorite players out there because I genuinely think he likes playing basketball.   He’s a passionate contributor and you can tell he cares out there.

However I do have a problem with his game.  After seeing him in at least 100 games it’s tough to watch someone with that much physical dominance who really can’t play basketball all that well.  Yes, I know you’re all thinking Shaq.  And granted you guys have a great point there.  But let’s not forget Shaq developed a great post game and was/is a VERY good passer for a man his size.  Sure he didn’t have the finesse of an Hakeem Olajuwon but Shaq knew how to ball (and kind of still does…or not).

I have no problem whatsoever with what USC did here.  None.  UCLA can call timeouts, hoping for a miracle comeback, but USC has to sit back with a 14-point lead?  The hell with that.

If you have a problem with the other team running up the score, stop them from doing so.  If it hurts your feelings that you can’t stop them, then maybe sports aren’t for you.  I wish things like this happened more often.

And I love how Pete Carroll thinks this is the funniest thing he’s ever seen in his life.

Clearly Lawrence Taylor doesn’t like apples.

This is an oldie but a goodie.  As Madison pointed out the other day, Allen Iverson is one of the finest examples of “keeping it real” in the history of the NBA.   Now how can you argue that after seeing this picture?

*Nov 07 - 00:05*

Bottom line, Iverson would rather not play at all than to be felt unwanted and come off the bench.  The NBA’s response?  “We don’t really need you buddy.”

On the one hand I appreciate Iverson’s ego.  It’s the kind of ego that only the greatest players have.  At the same time there’s a sense of me that says if this guy just kept his mouth shut, held his ego in check and accepted a reserve role on a championship contending team then he just might have a shot at a ring again.

I guess the debate is which version is the prouder guy.  Who is the guy you respect more?  The one who quits while he knew he was descending or the guy who gives it his all until he can’t play anymore and kind of looks foolish on the court (Shaquille O’neal is approaching this status)?

Problem here is that Iverson is neither because he’ll never really know.  But clearly this is a case of ego.  The man says “I’m still awesome and if you can’t handle me shooting 10-30 in a starting role then screw you.”  Clearly the NBA has had enough of that.

There’s no denying that Iverson is a hall of famer and I think he might have been one of the top 5 toughest competitors to ever put on an NBA jersey (remember he was 6’0 and 160 lbs soaking wet).

However, it’s pretty evident that he did lack a certain intangible that championship players have.  A willingness to put some selfishness aside and realize that you have an entire basketball team at your disposal.

Jordan did it, Kobe did it, will Lebron James ever do it?  Time will tell.

I wish Iverson the best but I’m sure he thinks he’ll get it.

Cincinnati QB, Tony Pike, will be starting for Cincinnati’s game against Illinois this weekend, allowing Bearcat fans around the country (Cincinnati) to stop holding their breath.

Pike’s return will be the most intriguing element of an out-of-conference game for teams at the opposite ends of their leagues. The Bearcats had one of the nation’s top offenses when Pike got hurt at South Florida on Oct. 15. A helmet hit damaged a protective plate in his non-passing forearm, which had been broken last year. Pike had to have the plate replaced.

Granted Illinois boasts a sad 3-7 record, but this is the time when upsets happen. Cincinnati is on the verge of doing something quite special, which is big for a school in Ohio that isn’t Ohio State. Not only is it big for Cincy to final crawl out from under the shadow of Ohio State, but as always, it’s big for the lesser known conferences everywhere. Yeah, they’re not in the MAC or something, but the Big East isn’t the SEC.

Look for Pike to help the Bearcats finish off their perfect season. Then they’ll be sitting in front of the TV, yelling like the rest of us for an upset that could land them in the title game.
