Charlie Weis has officially received the boot and the healing process at Notre Dame has begun. So who shall be the proverbial doctor? The healer of all things shitty about Notre Dame football over the past (insert your opinion) years?

Sports writers all over the country are throwing out there ideas and Irish alumni are most assuredly writing letters to the athletic department, as if they know something about football because they watch ABC and ESPN on Saturdays. How am I any different? I’m not! But that’s the glory of being a sports fan. You’re always right, and if they do hire someone else, then it’s they who have made the mistake!

Behold! My five suggestions for the next Notre Dame coach.

1.) Brian Kelly of Cincinnati

This shouldn’t be much of a surprise. Coach Kelly would be going the traditional route of making a previously “eh” team great before moving on to a supposedly better program. I hope he stays at Cincinnati. Just once I’d like to see a coach stay in a weaker conference, help build it up while the supposed better program continues to deteriorates. But just because that’s what I want doesn’t mean Notre Dame won’t keep their paws off him.

2.) Butch Davis of North Carolina

North Carolina Tar Heels Head Coach Butch Davis watches the action in the second half against the Virginia Tech University Hokies during the game at Lane Stadium on October 29, 2009 in Blacksburg, Virginia.
Another coach who has taken a previously crap program and made it respectable. Beware, Irish fans. As a Cleveland Browns fan, I can tell you that not everything Coach Davis has touched has turned to gold. But it does seem he feels much more at home in the college atmosphere. Something to think about…
3.) Gary Patterson of TCU

Basically the same story as Brian Kelly. Say what you will, but “Notre Dame” looks better on the resume than “TCU.”
4.) Urban Meyer of Florida

Urban Meyer IS the story of a coach who left lesser known programs for the struggling Gators. In case you didn’t know, he’s turned them around. So why go to Notre Dame? Well Roy Williams left perennial Kansas for North Carolina (albeit he had personal reasons), so why not Urban Meyer for Notre Dame? It is a far more storied program than Florida’s.
5.) Lou Holtz of ESPN

Yes! The man himself, Lou Holtz. This ESPN analyst with the lovable lisp is the perfect man for the job. The guy has been touting Notre Dame football ever since leaving the position, not to mention he was arguably the last successful coach with the Irish. I say bring him back if you want Notre Dame to be respectable again. I would, however, miss hearing his justification for a Notre Dame victory every Saturday morning, though.
Regardless of who ends up taking over, may pity be given to the poor sap that decides to take on one of the most unruly and hard to please fans in all of sports.
