Bearcats coach, Brian Kelly, is going to Notre Dame. I’m calling it now.

Notre Dame plans to interview Cincinnati’s Brian Kelly regarding its head-coaching vacancy Tuesday, most likely in New York City, a person close to the situation told ESPN’s Joe Schad on Monday.

Coach Kelly confirmed with his team and twitter account (funny how that’s a must-do these days) that he will “listen to what they have to say,” but we all know what that means. Here’s what Notre Dame’s going to say.

Notre Dame: Coach Kelly! You took the Bearcats of Cincinnati and made them into an undefeated powerhouse, worthy of a shot at the national championship – sorry about the standings, by the way. We definitely think you’d fit in will with our program. You win and we want winners! We believe in playing “like a champion,” as our famous locker room sign says. Did I mention people LOVE the movie “Rudy”? The job is yours!

While it’s complete BS, Coach Kelly knows that coaching at Notre Dame is what a coach is supposed to do next. Like it or not, there’s more history with the Irish than the Bearcats. Sure, I’d like Kelly to say “f*ck it” to the coaching system and stay with Cincinnati, but is that likely? Methinks it isn’t.

What bothers me most bout prestige programs looking for coaches (like Notre Dame) is that they do it in the run-up to the BCS bowl games. I realize they want their coach as soon as possible to get moving on the next season, but I believe a coach should be concentrating on his team and his team only for the duration of the season. Cincinnati’s season isn’t over. In a perfect world, Kelly would’ve told the Irish that he’d chat after their bowl game, but unfortunately this ain’t a perfect world.

If Kelly ends up taking the Irish job before Cincinnati’s game, I hope the Bearcats’ AD pulls a Bo Schembechler and fires his ass before the bowl game.
