Right. And I can still be the number one pick in the NBA, MLB and NFL draft (my childhood dream). It doesn’t mean it’s going to happen.
“That’s what I told them,” Patterson said. “I said our whole deal is we’re going to have to show the nation in this next bowl game that we belong … that we’re one of the top two teams in the nation. ‘You can still win the AP.’
I’m sure he’s using it as a form of motivation for his team whom he probably believes got screwed out of a chance to PLAY for the national championship, but if he really believes there’s an actual shot that TCU will win the AP… then someone needs to pinch him.
Statistically speaking, yeah, there is a chance they can. Alabama and Texas could spend four quarters taking a dump on the field and play 8 overtimes until someone wins 3-0 while TCU goes on to win 82-0. Anything is possible, but it ain’t freaking likely.
The ESPN piece notes that the precedent is there. Remember win LSU won the title, a la Nick Saban, yet USC won the AP? It happened. But that was the media picking their favorite team in Pete Carroll’s USC Trojans. They’ve always loved him and his team. Every year it seems like they’re in the top 5 and lose to some crap team in their conference. This year is a different story.
The AP, short of the scenario I described so vividly above, will not select anyone other than Alabama or Texas as number one, end of story.
