THE BORAS HIT PARADE

The winter meetings are being held. By now, you’ve heard the name Scott Boras a million times. I know its easy to just form opinions about him, and other people in his line of work. My feeling is the general populous feels that Scott Boras is a slippery, greedy deuche bag. He’s a wolf in sheep’s clothing. Whatever you may think, this dude can get it done. You have to respect someone like Boras, who has built himself up as the MAN when it comes to representing baseball players.  The guy is the Michael Jordan, the Bill Gates, the Kobayashi of contract negotiations. The guy makes miracles happen when it comes to getting MLB players money. Let’s see some Scotty’s better works.

1.) Bill Caudill

This one goes first because no one who reads this article is going to know Bill Caudill. What you should know is that Boras made this nutjob the second highest paid reliever in baseball. He was Boras’ first client, he made 1 All-Star game in ’84. The writing was on the wall early, Boras came to play.

2.) Brien Taylor

This one is my particular favorite being a Yankees fan. First, at the time Taylor was a high school phenom. So, even though today the Yankees look like idiots, at the time it may have not been soooooo far-fetched. Either way, Boras got Taylor a record setting $1.55 million dollar signing bonus and really paved the way for young draftees to get astronomical bonuses with their respective big league clubs. Oh yeah, Taylor never made it to the show.

3.) The J.D. Drew Incident

This one is fantastic. The guy got MLB to amend a rule because of this chump. In ’97,  Boras advised Drew against accepting the Philadelphia Phillies $3 million dollar offer after he was drafted by them. Drew went and played amateur ball for the St. Paul Saints while Boras filed a grievance with MLB to get Drew to “free-agent” status.  It eventually worked and he signed with the Cardinals for 3 times the Phillies best offer. Today, we have the amended “First Year Player Draft” because of this. Oh by the way, he also told Drew to opt out of his remaining 3 years at $33 mil with the Dodgers and got him 5 years at $70 mil from the Red Sox in 2007. J.D. must be sending him pretty sweet Christmas presents ever year.

4.) Alex Rodriguez

Obviously, we have to include A-rod. A-rod is Boras’ masterpiece. You know when you and your guy friends talk about the best looking girl they’ve ever hooked up with, well that’s A-rod for Boras.  The first time around Boras got A-rod a 10 Year, $252 million dollar contract with the Rangers, which was more than the entire price Tom Hicks paid for the Rangers three years ealier. Once again, he advised an opt out, and A-rod did in his 7th year. Although this situation strained their relationship, it got A-rod another 10 years at $275, with a chance to surpass $300 in incentives. Things have since been “repaired” in their relationship and Boras is still A-rod’s agent. As if that wasn’t going to obviously be the case.

There are TONS of other contracts like Maddux, Teixeira, Darren Dreifort, and Magglio Ordonez that are all works of Boras. Think what you want of the guy, but he gets teams to open their pocket book and he certainly capitalizes on players who are hot. Trust me, there are also TONS of teams out there right now kicking themselves because they got Boras’d.
