Thanks to Coach Turner Gill’s jump from head coach of Buffalo to Kansas, Cincinnati will be losing yet another coach. This time, it’s not until the end of the season.
Jeff Quinn’s will be Buffalo’s new football coach following the departure of Turner Gill.
Quinn’s hiring was announced by the school Sunday, but he will remain as Cincinnati’s interim coach until after the Bearcats play Florida in the Sugar Bowl on Jan. 1.
Good Lord! What a couple of weeks for the undefeated Bearcats, who have now lost their head coach and will be losing their interim coach. I wonder how many undefeated teams in the history of NCAA football have lost their head coach, let alone the interim coach put in place to replace the departing head coach.
Part of me wonders if Cincinnati is letting Quinn stay the interim coach simply because it looks absolutely ridiculous to change coaches twice before a bowl game OR if it’s because they don’t know who to turn to should they bar Quinn from coaching.
I’ve always appreciated what then Michigan AD, Bo Schembechler, did when he fired the head basketball coach of a good Michigan team, because he took another job. This, as you might remember, is the “Michigan Man” speech. He wasn’t going to have anyone other than someone dedicated to his program coach one of their teams.
Whether it was Kelly or Cincinnati’s doing, I was glad to see Kelly wouldn’t be coaching the Bearcats after he accepted the Notre Dame gig. At the same time, I wonder what keeps Quinn at the helm. He is now a Buffalo Bull, for all intensive purposes, and should therefore have nothing to do with Bearcat football.
