Free agents have been avoiding the Mets like a plague.
Free agent RHP Jason Marquis agreed to a 2 year, 15 million dollar deal with the Washington Nationals Monday. The Long Island native was thought to be an off-season target of the Mets.
ESPN’s Jayson Stark is reporting NY is talking to veteran SP Pedro Martinez about a return to Queens. However, the proud righty is seeking a salary in the Brad Penny range(1 yr/8 million with incentives) and Mets management might balk at this.
If the Mets were a girl, she’d be suffering from some serious self esteem issues right about now. Nobody wants to take the Mets to the prom, and guys like Jason Marquis – who grew up on Long Island – would rather take their chances with the prude chick (the Nationals) than the weathered, syphilis-infested slut who’ll do anything.
So while Bengie Molina and Jason Bay continue to tease the Mets (how bad is it going to be if neither of them sign? If they do, they will be grossly overpaid), the Mets have succumbed to groveling at the feet of an ex-boyfriend who was great at first, but then ditched them for a better-looking girl in the Phillies.
It’s really been an embarrassing offseason for the New York Mets, and their fans have a right to be disgusted. And oh yeah, no one wants fucking Luis Castillo, guys.
