The big news out of college football this past weekend had little to do with USC’s ongoing McKnight/SUV saga and more to do with Coach Meyer’s “I resign… NOT!”
Florida coach Urban Meyer changed his mind Sunday and said he was taking an indefinite leave of absence instead of resigning. Despite ongoing concerns with his health, he expects to be on the sideline leading the Gators when next season opens.
“I do in my gut believe that will happen,” he said Sunday at a Allstate Sugar Bowl news conference.
I’m no Florida fan, hardly an admirer of Tebow’s speech last season and I’ve done my fair share of criticizing how Meyer handled the eye-gouging incident earlier in the year. But I can’t help but fall in love with the guy whilst watching his interview. When he talks about leaving it up to prayer and his family, he just seems like a really genuine guy.
The condition, apparently, leaves Meyer ill when feeling stressed, excited, happy, sad or a list of other basic human emotions. Not exactly a cold for a college football coach. As much as we fans bitch and moan about coaches, these guys go through a lot. The planning, executing, recruiting and taking crap from said fans who bitch and moan.
I’m all for making health problems public in order to raise awareness and all that good stuff, but I’m slightly concerned this could have a negative impact on his coaching career. If I’m a player for Coach Meyer either getting chewed out or patted on the back, I might have his condition in the back of my mind. Obviously Meyer knows his body better than anyone else, so hopefully he keeps it in check. Because as he said, family is hundreds of yards more important than football.
Okay, I added the lame “yards” joke.
