Because if you sit on Bengie Molina and Jason Bay all winter, you’ve got to at least spend something to keep the fan base happy, right? After John Lackey signs with Boston, you’ve got to prove that you’re still in the mix and willing to make moves, yeah? I don’t think these are the types of moves Mets fans were hoping for.
NEW YORK (AP)—The New York Mets have signed right-hander Kelvim Escobar to a one-year contract.
The team announced the deal on Monday. He was expected to get $1.25 million.
Escobar, an 18-game winner in 2007, missed nearly all of the past two seasons with the Los Angeles Angels because of shoulder trouble. If healthy, he would likely work out of the bullpen for the Mets, who are looking for setup help for All-Star closer Francisco Rodriguez.
There’s the obvious “Omar Minaya is a racist” joke to be made here, but I’ll spare you. Actually, I won’t – racism is the only explanation for Minaya passing on white players to sign yet another Latino, especially when you consider that Escobar has missed almost two full seasons due to injury. The ONLY explanation.
The J.J. Putz acquisition was a disaster for the Mets last season, and the set-up role in the bullpen is obviously one that needs to be addressed, but why not outbid the Braves for Wagner? Why not go hard after Capps? The Mets have the money, but – ohhhh, that’s right. Because Wagner and Capps are white.
I can’t decide whether Kelvim Escobar has a retarded or awesome name (leaning towards Awesome-o 5000), but I’ll be shocked if he can give the Mets 30 innings this season. It’s amazing how the Mets have failed to sign impact players but have no problem flushing money down the toilet for gimps.
Have fun competing with the Nats.
