It looks like Fernando Martinez or Angel Pagan will not be starting in left field for the Mets next season. Naturally, it took some over-paying by the Mets for this to happen, but you’ve got to give them some credit (I think) for getting the job done.
The Mets made their first major move of the offseason and added a big bat in Jason Bay. The former Sox outfielder agreed to a contract that will pay him $66 million over four years and could go over $80 million in five years. It looks great on the surface since Bay gets paid and the Mets get some much-needed power.
Well, “much-needed power” is true, especially if David Wright hits only 10 home runs again next season. Still, I don’t know how much this signing improves the Mets. Bay is certainly capable of a stinker of a season (see 2007), but I don’t think that’s very likely. What will ultimately sink the Mets is pitching.
Adding a left fielder with decent power (who is already 31) isn’t going to stop Oliver Perez and Bobby Parnell from taking the mound every fifth day. Johan is a stud, but he’s coming off surgery, and Maine and Pelfrey make up two of the thickest vagina lips in the National League. Seriously – have you ever seen a guy with velocity like Pelfrey who is so afraid to throw his fastball for strikes?
Anyway, $66 million over four years isn’t terrible, but…yeah, it’s not so great.
