Drew_Stanton_7

It looks like the crappy Lions are shaking things up a little bit.

Christmas came early. But that didn’t make the wait any less excruciating. Lions coach Jim Schwartz pulled Drew Stanton aside Wednesday morning to deliver the glad tidings: The former Michigan State quarterback will make his first NFL start Sunday against the 49ers. And for a welcome change, the smile on Stanton’s face didn’t have to be forced: He was a happy 25-year-old kid.

I just want to wish Drew all the luck in the world. But I don’t know folks. Does having a supposed gambling and drug problem in college translate into NFL success? Only time will tell.

However, I can say this. If he comes off as being good I sure as hell he goes back to his partying ways. Let us further examine what I’m talking about….

David Lee wanted some dough last summer and didn’t get it.  Did he hold out?  No.  Did he cause a major fuss with the media?  Nope.  Did he whine and bitch when he didn’t make the all-star team last year despite averaging 16 pts and 11 boards on 54% shooting?  As one writer put it

The money he wanted from the Knicks last summer and didn’t get will be there for him in July. Lee’s preference is to re-sign with the Knicks, but if the club decides to move in a different direction, he expects there won’t be a shortage of suitors.

Damned straight.  David Lee is an All-Star, plain and simple.  He may not be the sexiest player out there but you can be damned sure he’s one of the biggest reasons the Knicks have gone 8-3 in December, yes 8-3.  I haven’t had this much fun being a Knicks fan since Patrick Ewing was on the team.

And if his 18 pts, nearly 11 rebounds on 56% shooting plus over a steal and a healthy 77% from the line aren’t all star numbers than I really don’t know what are.  Who the hell else in the league is averaging that?  Not many players folks.  Not many at all.

I’m 99% sure if I attempted a catch like this I’d not only pull out my back but I’d get a migraine, hamstring injury, something would happen to my toe, I might be paralyzed, and I’d probably complain a lot.

Good thing I’m sitting on my ass and letting this dude do all the work.

Anytime someone headlines frequently, they are going to either get a shinefest from me or I am going to blow up their world. Lately, we’ve seen a lot of Tyreke Evans. He’s having quite the rookie season. He’s probably the leading candidate for ROY. Congratulations to your success……. here we go….

First, when you google this young man’s name, various searches come up; “Tyreke Evans Basketball”, “Tyreke Evans Memphis”, “Tyreke Evans High School”, and my personal favorite, “Tyreke Evans Murder”. Well there’s a red flag.  Here is an account of the incident for those of you who are curious.  Evans is from Chester, PA, which is a very rough area, and by no means upper class. Probably not the easiest place to grow up.  The problem is Evans has had people on his nuts since he was 14 years old. He was annointed the next big thing to come out of this area, and the publicity followed. I saw him play in high school (his nickname was “Too Easy” by the way) at Villanova University. It was a zoo, the guy had body guards. If you need body guards at Villanova, there’s a problem.

This isn’t really a shinefest or an annihilation. It’s hard for me to really jump all over Evans. It’s Christmas and technically he wasn’t at fault in the incident. It’s even harder because I have a strong sense it’s more of a product of his environment and the people that surround him. How many times do we see a young athlete, given everything in the world, except proper upbringing and role models? The key is where do we go from here? Does Evans mature, realize his IMMENSE fortune in life and use it for good, or is this another case of “Mo money, Mo problems”?……… I really hope not.

Finding dirt on professional athletes is toooooooo easy…………………

The above picture is said to be responsible for Notre Dame’s troubles of late. Experts then point to pictures of “hot girls” with other college quarterbacks, most notably Tim Tebow and Colt McCoy. Since this story has received more creedance than I would have ever expected, I think it needs to be noted.

The girls quarterbacks hang out with have about as much affect on the outcome of a game as the amount of unicorns in the stands.

Don’t get me wrong. I understand it’s supposed to be all in good fun, but I’m just not a fan of criticizing a girl, because she’s not your typical tits with legs. Jeff Pearlman, awesome sports writer, made a good point when a picture of a female rowing team was released. These women, unfortunately, had a bit of camel toe going on. Mr. Pearlman reposted the picture, thinking it was a quick chuckle, only to take it down the next day, apologizing. Why’d he apologize? Because he wondered, “What if that was my daughter?”

Well to all those who think it’s fair game to call a couple of girls ugly for making the mistake of posing with Jimmy Clausen, I hope you’re blessed with your own little girl who would be considered non-traditional to you folks. Kinda like the South Park episode where parents explain to their son that he’s disabled, because they always made fun of kids with disabilities in high school.

Karma is a bitch… Says the holier than thou asshole who just wished vengeance upon a random mass of people. Oops!

noah

When is the last time two players from the same college grabbed 20 or more rebounds in an NBA game on the same date?

Because that’s what Gators Joakim Noah and David Lee did last night, each grabbing 21 boards during the Knicks/Bulls matchup.  A 20+ rebound game for more than one player on any given night is a pretty rare occurrence, so you’ve got to figure the chances of two guys doing it are pretty slim.  And then the chances of both of those dudes coming from the same college?  I’d venture to guess that this has never happened before.

Meanwhile, in Minnestoa. Gator Al Horford pulled down 11 boards for the Hawks.  Come on, Al…pull yourself together.

But more on my boy Noah – before last night, he was 3rd in the league in rebounding.  He is the only player this season to grab at least seven boards in every single game this season.  Simply put, he’s turned out to be a real good NBA player, and I love that all the haters have to eat crow.  Call him ugly all you want, but he’ll bang your girlfriend before smoking a fattie and dropping yet another double-double.  I want to touch him.

Trail Blazers Mavericks Basketball

Maybe I shouldn’t complain about all my bad luck after taking a look at how unlucky the Blazers have been this season, but you have to understand that I have legendarily bad luck when it comes to fantasy sports.  My fantasy football team featured Ronnie Brown and Michael Turner, so you can already tell how my playoffs turned out (for an added bonus, I’m in a point-per-reception league and happened to play against Brandon Marshall the day he broke the NFL record for receptions).  I had drafted Colts WR Anthony Gonzalez this year, but he hasn’t played a down after injuring himself in the first game of the season…without getting touched.

I was pumped to have drafted Kelenna Azubuike this year in fantasy hoops, until he destroyed his knee and was out for the season.

In something like four of  five seasons, Jake Peavy had an ERA below 3.00.  The year I had him, though, it was 4.09.
