If this were any other team in baseball, I’d be shocked. For the Mets, this is just par for the course.
News out of Chicago today has J.J. Putz saying he never took a physical with the Mets before being traded from the Mariners. In fact the first physical he took was the spring training physical that even a dead person could pass.
In an article Putz says “I had the bone spur (in the right elbow). It was discovered the previous year in Seattle, and it never got checked out by any other doctors until I got to spring training, and the spring training physical is kind of a formality. It was bugging me all through April, and in May I got an injection. It just got to the point where I couldn’t pitch. I couldn’t throw strikes, my velocity was way down.”
Absolutely amazing. And it’s not like Putz was a bench player – the guy was brought in to be the dominant, 8th inning set-up guy, and the Mets never bothered to have him physically examined.
The Mets have proven over the past decade or so that they truly are the worst-run team in MLB. It’s not even close. Every single signing, trade, or firing they somehow manage to fuck up. At this point, bringing in Isiah Thomas to run the team might actually be an improvement. Turn management over to a pack of starving hyenas. Let a Speak N Spell make trades. There is no plan that could make the Mets appear any more incompetent than they already do.
