Despite her complaints, Michelle Damon is going to have to deal with her husband playing in Detroit. Johnny Damon signed a 1-year deal for $8 million with the Tigers this weekend. The aging Damon, and his agent Scott Boras miscalculated the market for the left fielder and ended up taking an 11th hour deal with the Tigers.

To Boras’ credit, even though it’s a 40% paycut, he still got Damon $8 million. Things were looking bleak for the ex-Yankee, who refused to re-sign with the Yanks for what could have been a two year deal for even more of a discount. So while Damon sat back and watched the Yankees spend money on Randy Winn, Nick Johnson, and Marcus Thames, he had to start to wonder about his future.

What we don’t realize is Damon is in need of some money. His previous divorce and spending habits have left him in somewhat of a precarious position. Instead of taking a small multi-year discount with the defending champs, he had to hold out and hope an owner somewhere would see eye-to-eye with him on his value. He stood firm about making the same amount he made in 2009, and because of that he watched teams brush right past his name.

Now Damon, 36, heads to Detroit where he may find himself in a platoon with Carlos Guillen for left field. Where, even though he brings his reputation, has to reset his footing and try to avoid fading into the abyss. Damon is playing on a 1-year contract, without his precious Yankee stadium right field. I can’t see this story ending well.
