Apparently Stephen Jackson wasn’t too happy with the way some of the Celtics acted toward him during their 104-80 romp of the Bobcats last night.
“I respect them as a team, they’re a great team and they play hard, but when they get to a point where they get to disrespecting people and it’s not about basketball, that’s where I have a problem,’’ said Jackson, who has had his share of off-the-court issues during his 10 seasons. “Everybody knows me as a basketball player, but everybody knows me off the court, too. So if it’s about basketball, I’m cool. I respect everybody on their team, and I respect them as being a good team, but when it gets to the point where you’re disrespecting us as a man, that’s another problem.’’
I’ve usually found that the guys who use the word “respect” the most really don’t have much of an idea of what it even means. Jackson, in just the quote above, uses it FIVE times. He’s like that old Adam Sandler bit from the “They’re All Gonna Laugh at You” album.
Granted, Paul Pierce can be a real jerkoff on the court (flopping around and faking injuries every other play), but I’m guessing that Stephen Jackson is overreacting to something harmless. It’s like this time I was playing pickup ball and people were arguing over a stupid traveling call or some other such nonsense – it gets to the point where you just don’t care and want to keep playing. I told everyone to stop crying and to play some fucking basketball, and one guy was just livid. He told me that you don’t speak to another man like that because it’s disrespectful. And that’s what I think is going on here – someone (Jackson) really doesn’t know what the fuck respect means and just substitutes the term for “being polite.”
I wouldn’t mind seeing him stab Pierce in the face a la Made Men, though.
