I’m not sure I really get the point of this.

The NFL owners will vote on a change to the postseason overtime rules this week at their annual meetings. It’s not aimed at the Saints, who beat the Vikings in the NFC championship game by winning the coin toss and marching for the game-winning field goal without giving Minnesota a chance to get the ball.

It’s aimed at putting fairness into the overtime rules. Under the proposed rule, teams could win on overtime’s first possession only by scoring a touchdown. If the first team to get the ball manages only a field goal, the other team would get a possession.

If the second team fails to score on that possession, the game ends with the first team winning. If the second team also kicks a field goal, the game then reverts to the sudden-death format. The second team could win the game by scoring a touchdown on its possession.

So in order to make overtime more fair and avoid the bullshit of a sudden death score knocking out a team that was unfortunate enough to lose a coin toss, the NFL is considering allowing a bullshit touchdown knocking out a team that was unfortunate enough to lose a coin toss.  Great.
