Check out Andy Samberg running from the po-pos. I’m sure by now you’ve read about the Phillies fan that ran on the field last night and was tased. I’m not sure if this is going to be some hot-button issue about police brutality, but either way, I’m not really sure how I feel about it. I mean, on one hand, you can’t have fans running onto the field, no matter how goofy and harmless they may look. It’s one thing to disrupt the game, but it’s not fair to the players out there trying to to their jobs. Plus it’s a royal pain in the ass for cops to chase these guys down in front of thousands of people, so tasing is a pretty good punishment and/or deterrent.
But on the other hand, I’m not a real big fan of cops getting much leeway in terms of subduing someone who is unarmed (yes, they have no way of knowing for sure, but Andy Samberg here would be packing a bowl instead of packing heat). A lot of cops (not all, relax) are simply bullies from high school who sat around and watched the kids they picked on become educated and successful, and so now they use their badges as a means of grasping onto whatever power they once had. Allowing these meatheads to wield tasers in the first place seems kind of unfair. So really, you can see how I’m torn on this.
In the end, though, I’m gonna side with the cops – but only because this happened in Philly. In fact, maybe let the cops use their guns.
