With the passing of George Steinbrenner and me having just watched another movie I wasn’t 100% satisfied with I couldn’t help think about owners in professional sports. We as fans tend to put a lot of blame on players and coaches when it comes to a team sucking. We fail to remember that success usually starts from the top, not the bottom.
Just like any successful company, a pro team is generally the same way. After all the owner is the first true architect of a team. So if you get really pissed at a coach or player, next time start thinking about the owner as well when your team is sucking ass.
Speaking of owners. You know who would make great owners? Some characters in movies. Here are five fictional characters that should be pro sports team owners…..
Ari Gold

If any of you watch Entourage you’ll see that Ari’s in the midst of preliminary talks to become an owner of the L.A. Gold NFL Franchise. Sure he’s a total dick but can’t you see him being a very Cubanesque kind of an owner? Play Stations in the locker room, trips to strip clubs non stop, you know, the works. An agent would have a good mentality for all the prima donnas that would be on the team and I could just see it working out very well.
Sergio Roma

Played by Sean Combs, Sergio is the ruthless owner of a talent agency (mostly for music). He has a relentless pursuit of success and will do whatever it takes to “get his man.” From an owner perspective I could see him pulling off some serious trades and signings. Something tells me he might not build the greatest teams though. He would just recruit the most high priced talent. I could see the team being a success via playoffs but never a championship team. Possible off field incidents likely though.
Les Grossman

I mean come on. You can’t argue against this guy. It’s not possible.
Billy Madison

I was trying to think of someone who could be kind of like the Maloof brothers. Someone who is young, rich, and a fan of the game. I don’t really know any other really rich and care free characters other than Billy Madison. Then again, we could always go with Bud Fox. However, I don’t think he’s rich enough quite yet.
Gordan Gekko

Greed is good folks. A man who never stops because he’s so damned greedy for the best is exactly what you need in an owner. If there’s a guy who could fill the void of a George Steinbrenner it would be a Gordon Gekko.
