The Orlando Sentinel published a pretty cool article a couple months ago detailing Supreme Court Justice John Paul Stevens’ experiences one interesting day at Wrigley Field. The day was October 1, 1932, and it was the World Series. The rest is just stuff of legend, that only a figure like Babe Ruth could shoulder.

Check out this segment which immediately preceded the “Called Shot”

Chicago pitcher Charley Root threw a fastball past Ruth in the fifth to go up a strike, and the Cubs bench, led by pitcher Guy Bush, began heckling the “Bambino.” Bush even stepped onto the field and made a “whammy” gesture in Ruth’s direction.

Dude, a “whammy” gesture!! Guy got what was coming to him. After a couple balls and another strike, and Ruth continuing to point to centerfield, came the 2-2 pitch. The rest is history. Doesn’t old time Baseball seem so much cooler than today’s game. Check out the article it’s pretty cool. Damn “whammy” gesture!
