tiger-and-jack

Corey Pavin released his Ryder Cup picks much to the chagrin of woman activists all over the country yesterday. It appears as if Tiger wasn’t even in question all along in Pavin’s mind. Ricky Fowler, on the other hand, was a controversial selection that Pavin called a “gut feeling”. I am very glad he picked Cink and Johnson. Now the attention is going to be on Tiger. He was invited to the Dance, can he make it hot? Rest assured he will be the focal point for the next 3 weeks (he probably would be anyway). If I had to pick 5 golfers  for an “Unathletic  Ryder Cup Team” using every golfer in the history of golf here is who I’d take………….

1.) Jack Nicklaus

I shine the heck out of Michael Jordan for being the best basketball player of all-time. Jack Nicklaus is the best golfer of all-time. Nicklaus won 18 major championships, and came in 2nd more times than that. Jack was clutch, and there is nobody with a body of work like his. There’s also nobody else you want on the 18th standing over a winning put.

2.) Tiger Woods

I’m not really feeling the current Tiger, but how can you not pick him. His numbers currently rank close to or better than every other golfer, but Nicklaus. Tiger is a fierce a competitor as they come. Like Nicklaus, I take Tiger in the crunch the guy just gets it done.

3.) Bobby Jones

Why not pick the guy who started the Masters? The Major structure was not the same as it is today when he played, nonetheless he won them 13 times. He won the “Grand Slam” as a part time golfer. He never really committed to the sport, but he was arguably the most popular golfer of all-time. You need good publicity too!

4.) Ben Hogan

Despite struggling for years on tour before breaking through, and despite having his career interrupted and cut short by a horrific auto accident, Hogan still managed nine major championship victories and 62 career wins. At his best, he left his contemporaries in the dust.

5.) Gary Player

Gary Player over Arnold Palmer. Player has more Major victories, and a Grand Slam. Plus more victories AROUND the globe.  Going with Arnold Palmer wouldn’t be bad, but I’m going to take player. The price of being a captain.
