There’s something about a guy that looks like he weighs 14 lbs soaking wet who can put up 30 and grab over 10 boards every night that comforts me. Maybe it’s his baby face. Maybe it’s his quiet way of playing. Perhaps it’s that I look at Kevin Durant as the next generation George Gervin. Whatever it is, I love the kid.
He’s already gotten his first scoring title at an age younger than anyone in the history of the league. He’s being hyped as this year’s MVP. And there’s talk that his team can move deep into the playoffs.
But what I like about Kevin Durant is that he’s all done this…..quietly.
And by quietly I mean on the court. Durant is a crazy person. Sure he gets amped up like anyone else. And that’s a good thing. You need that competitive fire and it’s that emotion that fans are drawn to. But Durant isn’t a whiner. He doesn’t complain. He shoots a three, grabs a rebound, blocks a shot, and shoots a free throw quietly and smooth, just like Gervin.
You don’t hear much about Durant’s off the court activities. You see him in commercials. He’s a funny guy, unassuming, baby faced, and almost sweet. He’s a guy the NBA needs. He’s a guy that could represent the league in a way that it should. No criminals. No flash. Just good, hard basketball.
Do we need more Kevin Durants? Absolutely. Clearly not many guys will come along the league with the talent of a Kevin Durant but I hope to God we see more with the attitude of a Durant. It’s a breath of fresh air when you look at a young player like Durant because unfortunately there are so few like him.
The NBA has become a league of complainers. Hell just look at the Miami heat fiasco. It’s a bunch of cry babies who want their paychecks and bitch when they can’t get what they want. Sure it’s a little early to tell about Durant in terms of where he’ll be in 3 years. He could very well be the type who bitches about his contract. Time will tell on that but if I’m a betting man I’ll say he’ll do it all quietly.
Hit your three’s and get back and play defense. That’s Durant to me. And I wish the league was more full of guys like him.
