It’s been an interesting year thus far in college basketball off the court. There has been a hand full of suspensions, and I want answers. Yesterday, it was revealed that Brandon Davies was suspended from the BYU basketball team because he had sex. I’m not trying to make light of it. Those are the rules at BYU, and he violated them. He knew them coming in.

Here’s the thing, we can juxtapose these suspensions and try to connect them, but at the end of the day they simply reflect the University more so than anything else. What goes on at BYU is a lot different than what goes on at Mississippi State. Certainly, the NCAA and Conferences play a role in this, but regardless, I found it interesting…

Take a look a 5 suspensions that occurred this college basketball season and see if the punishment meets the crime…

(5) Brandon Davies – BYU – Honor Code Violation

The most recent suspension gets highlighted first. A very unique situation as Brandon Davies did not commit a crime. The fact of the matter is he did something naughty with a girl, which you cannot do at BYU. Either way, he was suspended the entire season. I give BYU respect for standing by their rules over winning, but geeeez.

(4) Bruce Pearl – Tennessee – Suspended 8 Conference Games

Bruce Pearl violated rules, and also misled an investigation. I mean this sounds pretty bad. The SEC considered suspending him for the entire SEC season, but not Bruce Pearl. Afterall, he came clean he misled an investigation, so he only got 8 games. Does this punishment fit the crime?

(3) Korie Lucious – Michigan State – Suspended for Season

Korie Lucious continued to make mistakes. Tom Izzo had enough. He dismissed Korie Lucious from the team earlier this season. He had all types of troubles off the court, and this to me is the most fitting suspension on the list. He was given chances. Apparently, he was real upset because he Tweeted, “Man, did I mess up.. Off 2 the gym I go!” the day of his suspension.

(2) Tyshawn Taylor – Kansas – Suspended Indefinitely

Interesting.. Tyshawn Taylor was just reinstated yesterday. Either way, he was suspended earlier this season for “violating team rules”. Whatever that means. Since we don’t know the crime, we can’t justify the punishment. However, Kansas is all about winning, you can bet they were lenient.

(1) Renardo Sidney – Mississippi State – Suspended Indefinitely

The Youtube suspension goes to Renardo Sidney who fought a teammate in the stands and got himself suspended. Renardo is another one who has been just trouble from the jump. His suspension this time.. a healthy two games… I doubt what he did was worse than Davies or Lucious. Consider Pearl and Sidney the lucky ones.
