Penalty kicks are one of soccer’s most exciting plays. In a huge match, playing for your nation, in front of a a huge crowd, it’s just you and the goalie. You miss… you’re a goat forever. You score….. you’re a hero. It’s quite incredible. Unfortunately, throughout the history of the sport there have been some big penalty kicks that were missed.
Hit the jump and you will see 5 PK’s that were epic… epic fails.
(5) 1986 World Cup, Michel Platini
Platini, netted a goal in this game vs. Brazil, and the French survived. However, this was just an epic choke job as he sent it over the cross bar on his birthday.
(4) Roberto Baggio, 1994 World Cup
Could be one of the biggest penalty misses in the history of soccer. Italy loses, Brazil wins. Baggio was one of the greats, nonetheless.
(3) 2008 Champions League Final, John Terry (5:30)
It was raining! You cannot make the mistake of underestimating the impact this missed Penalty has had on John Terry. He will wear it for the rest of his life.
(2) 2010 World Cup, Asamoah Gyan
For Ghana this would have been just an improbable run. It’s heart-breaking. Gyan had a PK with little time left that would have given them, most likely, the victory. Uruguay went on to win. Amazing sequence of events in this game. Gyan’s doing ok now in the EPL
(1) How about being a little closer….
HAHA!!
