An all too familiar scene; the Yankees congregating on the mound after clinching the AL East Division Title. The Bombers swept the Rays in a doubleheader yesterday with relative ease leaving Tampa and Boston to slug it out for the Wild Card. Oh, and we will not forget the Angels too.
If you’re a Yankees fan this is the dream scenario. The playoffs are a done deal, home-field throughout the AL playoffs is pretty much locked up, and the Boston Red Sox are getting beat and battered around. The great irony of the situation is that the Yankees, who will be resting regulars, play just Boston and Tampa from here on out. The Yankees will definitely rest their stars for the remaining games, which should make things interesting for Tampa and Boston.
Going into the playoffs you have three pitchers in my eyes; CC Sabathia, Ivan Nova, and Bartolo Colon. That will be the Yankees undoing. I will say this; do not sleep on Ivan Nova. He’s shown some moxy, and he knows how to win. With Phil Hughes likely to be done for the season, and Freddy Garcia seemingly out of contention, it appears as if AJ Burnett may be the the fourth starter. The offense and bullpen are as good as any team in the playoffs, but unless an unsung hero (Nova, Colon, Burnett) emerges this postseason, we won’t be seeing that same congregation on the mound again.
