The entire Duke family was in Madison Square Garden last night to watch Coach Mike Krzyzewski become the winningest coach in Division I Basketball history. Fittingly, Coach K passed his mentor Bob Knight, earning his 903rd win last night vs. Michigan State.

In the current climate of sports it’s nice to see a story like this. You have to believe that Coach K has done it the right way at Duke. If you look at the history, he’s always maintained a high graduation rate and has never ran into trouble with the NCAA. Duke basketball is without question one of the greatest programs in the history of the sport thanks to Mike Krzyzewski. The relationship with Bob Knight is also a great story. It was fitting that Coach K’s mentor was there supporting his protege.

As an aside, I just want to say that I think Tom Izzo is a class act. I love this quote he had about last night,

“It was in a no-win situation. I was either going to be the guy who threw the ball to Henry Aaron for the record breaker or the guy who shot Bambi.”

A night for a great coach and program with a good game, Duke Alumni present, mentor and protege, a fitting opponent… it was perfect.
