In 2010, the FIFA World Player of the Year and France Football‘s Ballon d’Or award were merged and the world’s best player has since been awarded the FIFA Ballon d’Or each year. Of course, we all know that Leo Messi has won the award the past two years and it hasn’t even been close. Unfortunately, with his eyes set on over 70 goals this year it’s hard not to think that he won’t win again, especially if Barca bring home some hardware.
So, to make this fun we’re just going to eliminate Lionel Messi from this contest. Say he was abducted by aliens last year and did not play for Barcelona this year, who would be the front-runner for Player of the Year…
Here’s our list…
It’s not all Europe as Neymar is poised to lead Santos FC in both domestic and international competition. I don’t think his squad will take Serie A in Brazil, but they could do some damage in the Copa Libertadores. Either way, he’s probably going to score A LOT of goals.
I hated this spot. I would like the public to way in on #4.. There are so many other options. I went with Benzema because he’s scored some absolute stunners this year and Real could win CL and La Liga. I knew with 5 I wanted to get outside Europe. I am fully confident in 1-3. I just didn’t know where to with 4… Benzema gets it.
Wayne Rooney is hot on Van Persie’s tail for top goal-scorer in the EPL so let’s hope RVP can hold on so I don’t look like an idiot here. With RVP poised to win the Player of the Year in England, I’m giving him the nod here despite the fact Arsenal isn’t winning anything.
Currently leading the Bundesliga and second in the Champions League in goal-scoring, Gomez has had a fantastic season thus far. It would be even more fantastic if Bayern knocked out Real Madrid after his magnificent game-winning goal in the 89th minute of the first league. Stock rising here.
Leo Messi is the mongoose to this snake. Ronaldo very well could be the best player in the world, but always seems to be trumped by his pal Messi. Real is in position to take home hardware largely because of the efforts of Ronaldo. He’s third in the Champs League in scoring and he and Messi will battle it out until the last game for La Liga’s leading scorer.
