It’s nice to see Penn State honoring Joe Paterno without any hint of the scandal. Like I said before, it’s a shame things went down the way they did, but I see nothing wrong with giving Paterno respect.

It’s Thursday morning. The end is in sight. You’re tired, this week seems interminable, and there’s still some work that needs to get done. Need a little pep talk?

Some coaches have it, some don’t. I can’t see Joe Torre firing up the troops before a big game. As much as I hate Rex Ryan, I think he’s got that part covered. We’ve seen plenty of inspiring speeches in sports movies, but how about real life. Here are some quality pregame speeches given by head coaches and others in all sports…..

Hit the jump to check them out.

Click on photo to read more about Posada’s retirement

Jorge Posada never got the credit Derek Jeter, Andy Pettitte, or Mariano Rivera got, but you better believe he was just as important to their success. People want to hate the Yankees, but what other team do you see have so many players retire from that organization and just express nothing but love for the pinstripes.

Price Fielder has reportedly agreed to a $214 million, nine-year deal with the Tigers, making him just the third player in major league history to receive a contract worth $200 million or more. He joins Alex Rodriguez, who has done so twice, and Albert Pujols, who signed with the Angels for $240 million over 10 years in early December. Fielder is listed, perhaps kindly, at 5-foot-11 and 275 pounds, and heavy-set, slow-footed, unathletic first baseman don’t tend to age well. The most obvious comparison for Prince is his father, Cecil, who is 6-foot-3 and played at well north of the 230 pounds Baseball-Reference has him listed at (in a 1991 SI story on father and son, Cecil, who was nicknamed “Big Daddy,” was listed at “about 260 pounds”). Cecil averaged 37 home runs from his age 26-32 seasons from 1990-96 but was a league-average part-timer at 33, below average at 34, and retired at 35. The comparison is a bit unfair to Prince, as Fielder is a better hitter than his old man, but Cecil isn’t the only problematic comp.

If this is in fact true… The Tigers could be in a world of hurt the next few years. They have a history of signing some “overweight” players.. hit the jump if you don’t believe me

Cleveland Indians manager Manny Acta says the pitcher known as Fausto Carmona is an important part of the rotation and the team is doing what it can to speed up his arrival. Acta told The Associated Press late Monday that the team is making the necessary moves to get Carmona to the United States for the coming season but also will be prepared to go without him. Says Acta:

“It doesn’t matter that he was a little inconsistent last year. Fausto is an important part of our rotation.”

My guess is they don’t need him for his base running. This is amazing. Who cares if the guy faked his identity? Who cares if the guy is 3 years older than he said he was? Only in professional sports man. This dude would have been fired from McDonald’s in a heartbeat.

I’d just like to say that I would gladly play the worst position in sports if it meant being a professional athlete and making half a million dollars a year. I’m not knocking the guys who play these positions at all. I’m simply saying that as a kid, I’m sure no one dreams about becoming one.

Unathletic has compiled a list of 5 Positions in Professional Sports that kids never dream of becoming. In other words, kids don’t go out to the backyard or basketball court and fantasy about being a ______ when they grow up. The reality is if kids focused more on the necessary skills needed to become one of these guys than they may have a better chance of going pro.

Alright enough rambling.. Take a look at 5 Positions in Professional Sports Kids Never Dream of Being One Day…

Same teams, a totally different game. I don’t think you can go wrong either way. I wouldn’t be upset if the Patriots won in honor of Bob Kraft’s late wife. I wouldn’t be upset if the Giants won and beat Tom Brady. I’m content with this matchup.

Ryan Braun referred only in passing to his positive drug test and possible 50-game suspension as he accepted the National League MVP award at a black-tie dinner Saturday night. After congratulating other award winners and thanking teammates, family, and the Milwaukee organization, the Brewers left fielder, speaking before a crowd of around 800 in a hotel ballroom, thanked the Major League Baseball Players Association for supporting him through his entire career, “especially for supporting me through everything I’ve went through over the last couple of months.”  Braun said,

“You know, sometimes in life, we all deal with challenges we never expected to endure. We have an opportunity to look at those challenges and view them either as obstacles or as opportunities, and I’ve chosen to view every challenge I’ve ever faced as an opportunity and this will be no different. I have always believed that a person’s character is revealed through the way they deal with those moments of adversity.”

Adversity? The guy is acting like he has a disease (he may in fact have a disease) or he lost a familiar member. That statement would have been applicable if you were Jon Lester pal. No one feels bad for you, you weasel.
