Welcome to the Other

Egypt’s parliament has scheduled an emergency session on Thursday to investigate the causes of a riot at a soccer game that left more than 70 people dead and 1,000 injured. Officials in Port Said, where the violence occurred on Wednesday, raised the death toll to 74 after fans of rival soccer teams rushed the field, hurling stones and sticks at each other and sparking a stampede. Citing the Health Ministry, state television reported another 1,000 people were injured in the riot. The riot was the worst case of soccer violence in Egypt’s history and the deadliest worldwide since 1996. One player said it was “like a war.”

Absolutely horrific scene that has left Egypt in mourning. We put together a couple videos of the riot. It just looks absolutely crazy. It’s hard to fathom that something as tragic as this can happen at a sporting event. It should never come to this, EVER. Hit the jump to check out the videos.

I don’t exactly get much time to observe the International Basketball League.  I would imagine that most of you are probably in the same boat.   Fact is, even if I could I don’t think the level of the athletes is quite as high as our NBA guys so it’s not as likely that I’d want to watch.

However, the folks in Vancouver might disagree.   Now I’m not saying that their Volcanoes squad is all that talented.  But I will say that their cheerleaders are certainly worth a peek.

Check out their pics after the jump….

Video is amazing. I love how the kid took his time to size this thing up. After a couple little crouches I began to realize this isn’t going to go well. Hilarious. Keep practicing little man, the Summer Olympics are in a couple months.

The Nevada State Athletic Commission on Wednesday voted 5-0 to grant Floyd Mayweather Jr. a one-fight license to face Miguel Cotto on May 5 at MGM Grand in Las Vegas. During his licensing hearing in front of the commission in Las Vegas, Mayweather Jr. told the panel under questioning that he had a deal in place to face junior middleweight titlist Cotto on May 5 at the MGM Grand.

The deal between Mayweather (42-0, 26 KOs) and Cotto does not come as a surprise. With a much-anticipated fight between Mayweather and Manny Pacquiao off the table at least until the fall, Mayweather-Cotto is widely considered the next biggest fight he could take. Junior middleweight titlist Saul “Canelo” Alvarez was also considered a leading candidate to face Mayweather. Mayweather-Cotto also means that Pacquiao, who intends to fight June 9, will not be facing Cotto in a rematch. Pacquiao-Cotto II was one of the potential fights Pacquiao and his promoter, Bob Arum, had discussed. The leading candidate to face Pacquiao in June is junior welterweight titlist Timothy Bradley Jr. Cotto (37-2, 30 KOs) had been promoted by Top Rank for his entire career but his contract recently expired. If the fight with Mayweather goes through it will be the first fight of his career without Top Rank’s involvement.

Aren’t we all happy for Floyd Mayweather. I’m so happy he’ll be able to get a couple million right before he heads off to jail. Nothing would please me more than for him to get his ass kicked, go to jail, then never to be heard from again. I have to be honest with you, the biggest loser in this in Manny Pacquiao. As much as I hate to say it, if the two aren’t fighting, Floyd is in the better situation.

As you know we pride ourselves on not only covering the standard, delightful, high quality cheerleaders from professional and collegiate sports teams.   We also like to find talent in other leagues and unexpected places.

This year, the Philadelphia Wings of the National Lacrosse League have their own talented bunch of cheerleaders.  In fact only a couple short weeks ago they made their debut.

Thankfully we have some photos of the event after the jump….

Everton’s shock win vs. Manchester City yesterday didn’t go without a little fun. Some drunk moron ran onto the pitch and handcuffed himself to the goal-post. This is a new one on me. I guess I have to give him an A for creativity

This picture was taken as 22-year-old Colten Moore lost control of his snowmobile while in midair and suffered a nasty 120-foot fall during his second run in the first heat of the elimination round. He was able to shake off the injury thankfully.

The Winter X Games are going full-throttle right now. Obviously, Shaun White is winning gold. If you’ve been missing that action we put together a nice compilation of X Games photos.

Hit the jump and enjoy…
